My days among the Dead are past;
Around me I behold,
Where'er these casual eyes are cast
The mighty minds of old;
My never failing friends are they,
With whom I converse day by day.
2.
With them I take delight in weal,
And seek relief in woe;
And while I understand and feel
How much to them I owe,
My cheeks have often been bedew'd
With tears of thoughtful gratitude.
3.
My thoughts are with the Dead, with them
I live in long-past years,
Their virtues love, their faults condemn,
Partake their hopes and fears,
And from their lessons seek and find
Instruction with an humble mind.
4.
My hopes are with the Dead, anon
My place with them will be,
And I with them shall travel on
Through all Futurity;
Yet leaving here a name, I trust,
That will not perish in the dust.
Modern rendering
내 나날은 죽은 이들 사이에서 지나갔다.
내 주위를 둘러보면,
우연한 눈길이 닿는 곳마다
옛날의 위대한 정신들이 있다.
그들은 결코 나를 저버리지 않는 친구들,
내가 날마다 대화하는 이들이다.
그들과 함께 나는 행복 속에서 기쁨을 얻고,
슬픔 속에서 위안을 찾는다.
내가 그들에게 얼마나 빚지고 있는지
이해하고 느끼는 동안,
내 뺨은 생각 깊은 감사의 눈물로
자주 젖었다.
내 생각은 죽은 이들과 함께 있고,
그들과 더불어 먼 옛해들 속에 산다.
그들의 덕을 사랑하고, 그들의 허물을 꾸짖으며,
그들의 희망과 두려움을 함께 나눈다.
그리고 그들의 가르침에서
겸손한 마음으로 깨우침을 찾고 얻는다.
내 희망은 죽은 이들과 함께 있다.
머지않아 내 자리도 그들 곁이 되리라.
그리고 나도 그들과 함께
모든 미래를 지나 여행하리라.
그래도 이곳에 한 이름을 남기리라 믿는다.
먼지 속에서 사라지지 않을 이름을.
