1. Bid me to live, and I will live
Thy Protestant to be:
Or bid me love, and I will give
A loving heart to thee.
2. A heart as soft, a heart as kind,
A heart as sound and free,
As in the whole world thou canst find,
That heart I'll give to thee.
3. Bid that heart stay, and it will stay,
To honour thy decree:
Or bid it languish quite away,
And't shall do so for thee.
4. Bid me to weep, and I will weep,
While I have eyes to see:
And having none, yet I will keep
A heart to weep for thee.
5. Bid me despair, and I'll despair,
Under that cypress tree:
Or bid me die, and I will dare
E'en death, to die for thee.
6. Thou art my life, my love, my heart,
The very eyes of me:
And hast command of every part,
To live and die for thee.

Modern rendering
1. 살라 명하라, 그러면 나는 살리라,
그대의 신실한 사람이 되기 위하여.
사랑하라 명하라, 그러면 나는
사랑하는 마음을 그대에게 바치리라.
2. 세상 어디에서도 찾을 수 없을 만큼
부드럽고 다정하고
바르고 자유로운 마음,
그 마음을 그대에게 바치리라.
3. 그 마음에게 머물라 명하면 머물 것이고,
그대의 뜻을 기리기 위하여.
아주 시들어 사라지라 명하면
그대를 위해 그렇게 되리라.
4. 울라 명하면 나는 울리라,
내게 볼 눈이 있는 동안.
눈이 없어져도 나는 여전히
그대를 위해 울 마음을 간직하리라.
5. 절망하라 명하면 나는 절망하리라,
그 삼나무 아래에서.
죽으라 명하면 나는 죽음까지도
그대를 위해 감히 맞으리라.
6. 그대는 나의 생명, 나의 사랑, 나의 마음,
내 눈 그 자체.
내 모든 부분을 그대가 다스리니
나는 그대를 위해 살고 죽으리라.
