그럼 모두 끝난 것이오. 진실이란
처음 생각만큼 쓰게 들리오?
들어 보오, 참새들이 당신 오두막 처마 밑에서
잘 자라 지저귀고 있소!
II.
그리고 포도덩굴의 잎눈은 보송보송했소,
오늘 내가 보았소.
하루만 더 지나면 활짝 터질 테지요.
알다시피 붉은 것은 회색으로 바뀌오.
III.
내일도 우리는 그대로 만나겠지요, 사랑하는 이여?
내 손에 당신 손을 잡아도 되겠소?
우리는 그저 친구, 그래, 가장 보통의 친구일 뿐.
그런 친구도 내가 포기하는 많은 것을 간직하오.
IV.
그토록 밝고 검은 눈의 한 번 한 번의 시선을,
내 마음을 다해 붙들어도,
설강화를 다시 보고 싶다 말하던 당신 목소리를,
그것이 내 영혼에 영원히 머문다 해도!
V.
그래도 나는 그저 친구들이 하는 말만 하겠소,
아니면 그보다 생각 하나만 더 깊은 말을.
당신 손을 누구나 잡을 수 있는 만큼만 잡겠소,
아주 조금만 더 오래, 그뿐이오!

All's over, then: does truth sound bitter
As one at first believes?
Hark, 'tis the sparrows' good-night twitter
About your cottage eaves!
II.
And the leaf-buds on the vine are woolly,
I noticed that, to-day;
One day more bursts them open fully
—You know the red turns grey.
III.
To-morrow we meet the same then, dearest?
May I take your hand in mine?
Mere friends are we,—well, friends the merest
Keep much that I resign:
IV.
For each glance of the eye so bright and black,
Though I keep with heart's endeavour,—
Your voice, when you wish the snowdrops back,
Though it stay in my soul for ever!—
V.
Yet I will but say what mere friends say,
Or only a thought stronger;
I will hold your hand but as long as all may,
Or so very little longer!
