She dwelt among the untrodden ways
Beside the springs of Dove,
A Maid whom there were none to praise
And very few to love:
A violet by a mossy stone
Half hidden from the eye!
—Fair as a star, when only one
Is shining in the sky.
She lived unknown, and few could know
When Lucy ceased to be;
But she is in her grave, and, oh,
The difference to me!

그녀는 사람 발길 드문 길가에 살았다,
도브 강의 샘 가까이.
칭찬해 줄 이 없는 소녀,
사랑해 줄 이도 거의 없는 소녀였다.
이끼 낀 돌 곁의 제비꽃처럼,
눈에 반쯤 가려진 꽃처럼,
하늘에 단 하나 떠서
빛나는 별처럼 아름다웠다.
그녀는 알려지지 않은 채 살았고,
루시가 세상을 떠난 때를 아는 이도 드물었다.
그러나 그녀는 무덤 속에 있고,
아, 내게는 세상이 얼마나 달라졌는가.
