허비된 시간의 연대기 속에서
가장 아름다운 사람들에 대한 묘사를 읽을 때,
아름다움이 오래된 운문을 아름답게 만들며
죽은 여인들과 사랑스러운 기사들을 찬미할 때,
그 달콤한 아름다움의 으뜸을 문장으로 새기며
손과 발과 입술과 눈과 이마를 말할 때,
나는 옛 붓들이 표현하려 했던 것이
지금 네가 온전히 지닌 바로 그런 아름다움임을 본다.
그러니 그 모든 찬사는 예언에 지나지 않는다.
모두가 우리 시대의 너를 미리 그린 것.
그들은 예견하는 눈으로만 바라보았기에
네 가치를 노래할 재주는 아직 없었다.
지금 이 현재의 나날을 보는 우리에게도
경탄할 눈은 있으나 찬미할 혀가 모자라다.

When in the chronicle of wasted time
I see descriptions of the fairest wights,
And beauty making beautiful old rhyme
In praise of ladies dead and lovely knights,
Then, in the blazon of sweet beauty's best,
Of hand, of foot, of lip, of eye, of brow,
I see their antique pen would have express'd
Even such a beauty as you master now.
So all their praises are but prophecies
Of this our time, all you prefiguring;
And, for they look'd but with divining eyes,
They had not skill enough your worth to sing:
For we, which now behold these present days,
Have eyes to wonder, but lack tongues to praise.
