I.
내 영혼 깊은 곳에 그 부드러운 비밀이 산다,
외롭고 빛을 잃은 채 영원히,
다만 내 마음이 그대 마음에 화답해 부풀 때만
예전처럼 침묵 속으로 떨며 돌아간다.
II.
그 중심에는 무덤의 등불 하나
느린 불꽃으로 탄다, 영원하나 보이지 않게.
절망의 어둠도 그 불빛을 꺼뜨릴 수 없지만,
그 빛은 애초 없었던 듯 헛되다.
III.
나를 기억해 다오. 오! 그대는 내 무덤을 지나치지 말라,
그곳에 누운 유해를 한 번도 생각하지 않은 채.
내 가슴이 감히 견디지 못할 유일한 고통은
그대 안에서 망각을 발견하는 것.
IV.
내 가장 애틋하고, 가장 희미하고, 마지막인 목소리를 들어 다오.
죽은 이를 슬퍼함을 덕은 꾸짖지 못한다.
그러니 내가 청한 모든 것, 눈물 하나를 다오,
이토록 큰 사랑의 처음이자 마지막, 유일한 보상을!

I.
Deep in my soul that tender secret dwells,
Lonely and lost to light for evermore,
Save when to thine my heart responsive swells,
Then trembles into silence as before.
II.
There, in its centre, a sepulchral lamp
Burns the slow flame, eternal—but unseen;
Which not the darkness of Despair can damp,
Though vain its ray as it had never been.
III.
Remember me—Oh! pass not thou my grave
Without one thought whose relics there recline:
The only pang my bosom dare not brave
Must be to find forgetfulness in thine.
IV.
My fondest—faintest—latest accents hear—
Grief for the dead not Virtue can reprove;
Then give me all I ever asked—a tear,
The first—last—sole reward of so much love!
